Writer’s Workshop

Whit loved writing. She loved it more than pretty much anything else in her life. She didn’t do it nearly enough anymore, but when she thought back to her time in high school and college, one of the things she loved most was how much time she spent writing.

She loved curling up under the covers, a nest of pillows beneath her, and that was how she’d do her writing. With a notebook as a high schooler, or a laptop in college. She’d dream up story bits that would tumble out of her brain, each one creating a new portal into the kinds of worlds where she always wanted to be.

It didn’t matter what she was working on. She loved writing modern fairytales, or murder mysteries, or supernatural thrillers. As a lifelong reader, she didn’t discriminate. She loved all the kinds of stories at her disposal. And most of all, she loved falling into stories as she wrote them becoming unaware of where the story world ended and her reality began.

But after college, a lot changed. She found a day job that didn’t pay enough, but it kept a roof over her head. She was expected to always work overtime, and she had no idea why she took the job other than she’d been operating with an “any port in the storm” kind of mentality. On an intellectual level, she knew that was probably false since the vast majority of art was created by adults. But still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was a selfish person for wanting to write.

She stayed with that company for five years, and finally made a change. She found a job that paid so much more, and gave her some more free time. She wasn’t doing anything incendiary, in fact her main job was inputting data into spreadsheets, and then interpreting that data in reports.

But after making the change, she knew she had time to start doing the things she loved again. She spent so much time working for others, it was now time to do some work she loved. The guilt was still there, but it wasn’t as big as her desire to write. Nor was it as big as her hatred for the sort of adult she was becoming without writing as part of her life.

So, with her new pay raise, she decided it was time to fall back into writing. There were so many stories she had inside her, and after being with the company for about a week, she sat down one Saturday to write.

Whit made a pot of coffee, and though she normally drank it black, she had purchased some half and half for the special day. In college, she always put half and half and brown sugar in her coffee, and she felt that this particular occasion called for that. She lit a scented candle that
